    Jeanne Arietta Safford, 71, of Wading River, loving wife, mother, teacher, friend and champion of many charitable causes, passed away on September 6, 2013, in comfort with her family surrounding her at Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson, NY. She died of respiratory failure due to complications from lung cancer.


    Jeanne was born in Ellicott City, Maryland to Mr. & Mrs. George and Eleanor Damm on January 13, 1942.  She graduated from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service with her Bachelor's Degree and received her Master's Degree from New York University in Childhood Education.  She married Edwin Safford, of Wading River, NY on January 22, 1966 in Hagerstown, Maryland. Jeanne spent her life as a teacher. She worked for several years teaching children with disabilities then began her life's work in adult education.   She was a leader for the Adult Literacy Program for decades at the Brooklyn Public Library, including work as the Treasurer and Fundraiser for the program. Later she volunteered for the North Shore Library as an adult literacy tutor.  She was also a significant contributor to the World Wildlife Fund, the Natural Resource Defense Council. 


    Jeanne is survived by her husband Edwin, her daughter, Sherna, and son, Jason, her grandchildren Jordan and Leah Cobb.
