Victoria Perrone left this world on August 23, 2023, but before that she lived every minute of what she had. Born July 10, 1973, she was the first born to Patrick and Peggy Perrone. Not quite five years later, her sister Jena arrived and a few years after that her sister Michelle.
Victoria loved to travel. In the last few years she added India, China, and southeast Asia to her ever-growing list of places she explored. She had been known to nip over to London when vacations lined up for an extra long weekend, and to bring her Mom along for the ride. Scandalizing the British with her request for tea with “sugar, but no milk” she rarely indulged in local culinary specialties, but otherwise she was game for anything. Parasailing, skydiving, and extreme museum wandering were all on her list of things to do. In each place she took wonderful photographs, bringing back her travels to share with the rest of us through her fun photo books and stories.
Six years ago her sister Michelle passed away, and Victoria and her mother became the main caregivers for Michelle’s one year old daughter Piper. Their travels began to include Disney and a week on the Gulf Coast in Alabama, planned with the same excitement and thoroughness as her international jaunts. As always, delightful photographs documented their excursions but now including the fresh perspectives of an inquisitive, curious and enthusiastic child. Piper brought a whole new light into her world, unexpected but welcomed instantly and wholeheartedly.
Victoria was a Special Education teacher at Riverhead High School for over twenty years. Those of us lucky enough to work with her could not help but be inspired by her unflagging dedication to her students even through her most trying times. Her years in Riverhead will be celebrated each time one of her kids achieves their next goal, when we recount a hysterical lunchtime conversation or when anyone uses a color-coded stapling system. “Warm and fuzzy” are not exactly adjectives that come to mind, but her kindness and generosity were second to none. When one of our former students faced a sudden, devastating unforeseen expense, she didn’t hesitate to hand over all the cash in her wallet right then and there. She knew what it was like to find yourself in tough circumstances through no fault of your own, and she never forgot it. She helped quietly, but constantly. Often the people she aided didn’t even know the help came from her. That was the way she wanted it.
In the end the damage from fighting cancer in her teen years caught up with her, but even as it made each breath a chore she was still planning adventures for herself and her family. Victoria Perrone will be sorely missed, but may we all live a life so full. She is survived by her mother Margaret “Peggy” Perrone and her niece Jaymes Piper Lamm. She was predeceased by her father Patrick Perrone and sisters Jena and Michelle.
