Robert Carlton Libby, age 89 of Sound Beach, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 3, 2026. Born on September 30, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York, he was a devoted husband to Laurel Jane and an amazing father to Karen, Diane, Tom, Bob and Jennifer.
Dad was hard-working and dedicated. He began his long career at Lehman Brothers, then Shearson Lehman at the young age of 17 and worked there until his retirement. He was known for his honesty, loyalty, sense of humor and unwavering integrity.
Dad loved his family, reading, Maui, and all things to do with the Islanders. We all have so many memories of going with him to the Islander games at the Colosseum back in the 1970’s and ‘80’s. His love of reading would often find him most evenings in his recliner in front of the fireplace with his latest favorite novel.
He had a such a fun sense of humor and loved to sit around with his family telling some really corny “Dad” jokes. He adored his grandchildren and was so quick to laugh and joke with them.
He is survived by his wife Laurel Jane, his children Karen (George) Orenchak, Diane O’Connor, Thomas (Kelly) Libby, Robert M. Libby, Jennifer (Kurt) Gunther, his grandchildren Laurel (Dave) Jelonek, Meghan (Steve) Dempsey, Caitlin (Chad) Larson, Trevor (Briana) O’Connor, Brandon (Jacqueline) O’Connor, Brooke (Tyler) Eister, Lauren Libby, Ryan (Kimmi) Libby, Chloe Libby, Kurt Gunther, Charlotte Gunther, and great grandchildren Kevin, Leah, Lincoln, Connor, Cameron, Caleb, Aviana, Shane, Liana, Jameson, Callum, Tony, Vienna, and Luciana as well as many friends and extended family members who will miss him dearly.
We find comfort in knowing that Dad’s legacy lives on through the lessons he taught us, the love he shared, and the many memories to last a lifetime.
