Mary Shanley

Mary Shanley of Wading River died unexpectedly at her home on August 30, 2026.  She was 85 years old. 

She was the daughter of Edward and Margaret Carr, and grew up in Marine Park, Brooklyn.  She graduated in 1961 from St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in Manhattan.  She continued to work there until she moved to Wading River in 1966 where she then worked for the next 40 years as a Registered Nurse at Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson.  Later in her career she went to college and earned her bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s college.

She married the love of her life John Shanley on June 27, 1964 and was married for 24 1/2 years before his death in 1989. 

She was our rock, she was there for her patients, friends, and mostly for her family.  If you ever needed anything she had your back and was there for you without question.  She was the resident medical expert!  If you had a question, a cut, or was just curious about something she was there to help you! Her presence will be missed and her impact in this world was felt by many! 

She was pre-deceased by her sister Noreen and brother John.  In laws Michael, Carolyn, Ronald and Olive.  Nephew Michael.

She is survived by her son Michael and his wife Pamela, her daughter MaryBeth and her husband Chris.  And her grandchildren Maggie, Connor and grand dog Bailey who she loved and was beyond proud of everyday! 

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Heart Association or give at Memorial Sloan Kettering.

 Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 3, from 3:00 - 7:00 PM at Alexander-Rothwell Funeral Home, located at 6447 Route 25A, Wading River, NY. A Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, September 4 at 10:00 AM at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, Wading River, NY.
