Born on the shores of a small town in Newfoundland, Canada, Margaret was the oldest of 9 children. With the Atlantic Ocean in her front yard, without paved roads, electricity or running water, hard work was a part of her daily routine. She quickly became a care giver to her younger siblings. She helped get them to their one room schoolhouse, helped with their lessons and assisted her mother with household chores.
At the naive and tender age of 18, she embarked on a 5 day journey to America. Even as she battled seasickness, she was eager to start a new life in New York City. She lived with her aunt (father’s sister), uncle and their children, where she quickly became like one of their own.
She established herself in the work force as a pay master for an insurance company on Wall Street. She made many friends, went on trips and became a pen-pal to her future husband, Alphonse (deceased).
After an extended, long distance relationship, they got married and honeymooned in Canada. They chose to start their new life together in Queens, NY. As the years went by their little family grew. They had 4 children, 2 daughters Maureen (deceased), Sharon, a son, Richard (wife-Sionnee), then another daughter, Denise. And as more time passed, those children grew up and started having families of their own.
Margaret took a hiatus from work to raise her children. Once they were old enough, she went back to office work and found great joy in helping a young doctor establish his medical practice. They retired to Long Island, where she made many friends and became very active in her communities’ programs. She partook in bible studies, women’s groups, the red hat society, bowling, bingo and night at the races.
She will be greatly missed by her surviving 2 sisters, Mary and Teresita (husband-Chris), and her brother Ron (wife-Zita); and her 3 remaining children and Jim (widow of Maureen). Even thought she was called by different names, Grandma, Nonna, Mama she will be missed by all of her 7 grandchildren; Jeanette, Shawn, Ryan (fiance-Saima) , Justin, Melissa (husband-Mike), Trevor and Alexander, 3 great-grandchildren; Jake (wife-Hailey), Dylan and Mateo and 2 great great grandchildren, Octavia and Daenerys, and a few generations of nieces and nephews both here and in Canada.
She will surely be missed.
