George S. Poppe, 101 of Scottsdale, AZ, Formally of Wading River, NY passed away peacefully at home on January 9, 2024.
Born and raised in Kenoza Lake, NY. He was the son of the late Ann Kraemer and Fred Poppe and stepson of Howard Pixley.
In 1945, he married his love Marion Schiesser in Beaufort, South Carolina while he was serving in the Marines. As a member of 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Corporal Poppe Participated in the historic invasion of Guadalcanal. He also took Part in the invasion of Peleliu where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart for his sacrifice.
Upon discharge, George began his career as NYC Firefighter, serving until his retirement in the mid 70's as the rank of Captain at Hook & Ladder 135 Glendale, Queens. He was known to never send his men into a fire until he first entered.
George leaves behind his 3 Children, Alan Poppe (Louise), Carol Poppe, Susan O'Connor ( Frank), 8 Grandchildren, and 15 Great Grandchildren. The Family wishes to thank the caring professionals of The Ranch Estates at Scottdale and Hospice of the Valley.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at Calverton National Cemetery at 10AM.
