John was truly loved by his wife Pat, his daughter Katherine, son-in-law Brian, grandchildren Elizabeth and Jonathan, and grand-dog Annie. Brother to Joseph (Nelida) and Sherry; predeceased by his brother Rodney (Betty). He was a graduate of the University of Washington and received his PhD in Physical Chemistry from Brown University, then working as a post-doc at UCLA.
Dr. J, as his nieces and nephews called him, worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory for 42 years where he met his wife. John did seminal research in materials science for nickel and metal hydride and lithium-ion batteries. As a part of the BNL Hydride Program, he also studied hydrogen storage methods. In addition, he contributed his expertise to support the RHIC project.
John was raised in Kent Washington and was a Washington Huskies, Seattle Mariners, and Seattle Seahawks fan. He was a gentle soul, beloved by his family, friends, and pets. His presence will be greatly missed in the lives of many.
John was a communicant of St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church in Shoreham. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated in John’s name to St. Mark’s Church.
