Doris Olson (Vasbinder), aged 98, passed into eternal rest on April 25, 2026.
Doris was born on March 26, 1928, in Hazen, Pennsylvania to William and Helen (Bullers) Vasbinder. Grandparents Edward and Macy were of tremendous influence in Doris’s upbringing.
Doris married her husband, Howard, in 1947 in Western Pennsylvania. In 1962, they relocated to Long Island, New York, due to Howard’s employment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage, often traveling back to Pennsylvania, sustaining their strong farming community roots.
Preceded in death by Howard, daughter Eleanor, infant son Bruce, and sisters, Evelyn and Edna, Doris is survived by son Gordon (Dixie), daughter Joan Arata (Nick), and son-in-law Clark Rechkemmer. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Robert Rechkemmer (Carolyn); Anne Chatfield (Patrick); Suzanne Nelson (Nathaniel); Celeste Horazdovsky (Kyle); Alexa Arata (Matthew Eisenhofer); and Nicholas Arata (Julia Zabriskie), as well as nine great-grandchildren: James, Will, Thomas, John, Jack, Ben, Augustus, Lucia, and Charlotte.
Employed as a secretary by the Shoreham-Wading River Central School District for 25 years, Doris was equally proud to be involved in her Shoridge Hills neighborhood community in Shoreham as well as a founding member of North Shore United Methodist Church in Wading River.
Known for her delicious apple pie and plentiful supply of home-baked cookies, Doris was happiest sharing her treats with family and friends.
