Charles Thompson Obituary

Charles Daniel Thompson passed away on August 30th, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Charles was born in Brooklyn, NY, on November 22, 1930. He grew up with three sisters. The eldest was Helen, then Lillian, Charles, and finally Claire. As a child, he would often visit his extended family in Maryland, working on their farms for the summer. Eventually, he and his sons and their cousins built a house on the Chesapeake Bay, where his family still gathers multiple times a year to enjoy the refuge of peace and nature Maryland offers. The memory of Charles will be carried on through his many loving family members. He spent 63 years married to his wife Patricia Thompson, with whom he had two sons, Daniel and Peter. In their childhood, Charles was their Coach for both their soccer and baseball teams. His sons later married and went on to have children of their own, giving him six amazing grandchildren and one great-grandchild. After serving for four years in the Navy, Charles returned home to New York, where he worked for Sperry Gyroscope in Lakeview, New York. Charles lived an enlightened life of both learning and teaching. He earned his undergraduate degree in Physics from Hofstra University. He then went on to pursue two master's degrees. He spent most of his career at Farmingdale College, where he was deeply involved with many of his students for whom he cared deeply. He stayed at Farmingdale College until he retired. Charles was an avid skier from childhood, and into his adult life, he spent many vacations, as well as his and Patricia’s honeymoon, on ski trips. Later in life, he enjoyed connecting with people and cultures through travel. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, and took a special liking to the Amalfi Coast, in Italy, returning for the food, people, and most of all, the historic significance. His interest in Italy went beyond just the country and continued to fuel his love for Opera, which originated from his older sister, Helen. She left behind her beloved collection of opera records that Charles would often listen to. In Wading River, where he spent most of his adult life. Charles was a proud member of the Shoreham Wading River gardening club. Charles and Patricia have cultivated a beautiful garden which Charles spent much of his retirement tending to his plants as well as his several-year-long hardscaping projects. Many a time, you would catch him sitting in his garden contemplating his place in the universe as he observed the many birds who would come by to visit. Though he has left us here as he embarks on his newest journey, we can all remember him through every Downey woodpecker as well as every Japanese maple tree we see, just like the one he had so meticulously raised in his home. Services will be held Monday, September 1, from 3-6pm at the Alexander Rothwell funeral home located at 6447 25A in Wading River NY. The burial will take place on Wednesday September 3, at 11:30 AM at Calverton National Cemetery. In addition, a Celebration of Life ceremony will take place on November 15th to honor Charles Thompson's memory and legacy.
