Joseph A. Burke, Jr., on November 5, 2016 in his 94th year. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 23, 1922. He joined the Navy in WWII and served on the destroyer USS Dallas, achieving the rank of Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class. He received the American theater ribbon, the European theater ribbon with three stars, and the Presidential unit citation. He worked as a fireman and then an engineer with the Pennsylvania Railroad and its successor companies until he retired in 1984. He was married to Mary Lilian (nee Burke) on January 6, 1946, and they remained devoted to each other until she pre-deceased him in 1991. He is survived by his daughter Diane Lages and her husband Bruce. He served the community of Leisure Village in Ridge, NY where he resided in various capacities and offices, did volunteer work at his church of St. Mark's, and served in his VFW post. He loved spending time with his friends, traveling, going to summer theater, the Longwood public library, playing cards and golf, meeting for breakfast at Brooklyn Bagels, or just being at the Leisure Village pool. Visitation Thursday 2-4 and Friday 2-4 & 7-9 at the Alexander-Tuthill Funeral Home, 6447 Rt. 25A, Wading River, NY. Mass Saturday 9 AM at St. Mark’s RC Church in Shoreham, NY. Interment to follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
